Some weddings feel like an event. This one felt like a family dinner that happened to have vows in it.
On July 11, Chairys and Jezza got married at Bat Haus, our intimate wedding venue at 459 Grand Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, surrounded by about 50 of their closest people — friends who have known each other for decades. Almost everyone in the room works in hospitality: cooks and servers, the people who spend every weekend of their lives feeding and taking care of New York.
Which is what made this day so special to host. For once, nobody in that room was working the party. The people who always carry the trays got to raise the glasses — for two women who are deeply loved and respected by every family and friend who showed up for them.
Two cultures, one room
Chairys is from the Dominican Republic and Jezza is from the Philippines, and their wedding carried both — two families and two traditions folded into one sun-filled Brooklyn room. That's the kind of celebration Bat Haus was built for: since 2012 we've hosted LGBTQ+ weddings, Nikah ceremonies, chuppahs, and every way families come together, and the best days are the ones where cultures meet in the middle of the dance floor.
Live music instead of a DJ
Instead of a DJ, Chairys and Jezza had a guitarist and singer play live — and in a space this intimate, it was perfect. Bat Haus is made for acoustic sets, small ensembles, and playlists through our in-house sound system, which keeps the room warm and the conversations possible. When the music is someone you know playing songs you love, 50 people feels exactly right.
